Left hand or right hand? Stand inside the room and look at the window. If the winder body sits on the left side of the frame, you need a left hand winder; if it sits on the right, you need a right hand winder. The chain always attaches to the sash on the opposite side from the body. It has nothing to do with which hand you use. Right hand winders come lockable in White, Black, Brown, Silver, Surfmist®, Monument®, Paperbark®, Primrose®, White Birch® and Merino. Not sure? Email a photo taken from inside with the window open to sales@tradebaseaustralia.com.au and we’ll confirm before you buy.

Choose left or right hand, lockable or non-lockable, standard 300 mm chain or restricted 100–150 mm chain (pool-zone safe), zinc or stainless, and the COLORBOND®-matched colour. Direct mechanical replacement for Whitco®, Stegbar®, Austral™ and most other leading brands, including Boral®, Dowell®, Trend®, AWS®, Bradnam’s® and Wideline®. All multi-pack lockable winders ship keyed alike to a single key.

Australia's widest range of window winders

TradeBase carries Australia's widest range of window winders: left and right hand, lockable and non-lockable, standard 300 mm and restricted chains, zinc and stainless, in more than 15 colours. That includes right-hand restricted-chain winders, keyed alike, in 100, 120 and 150 mm. Our winders are a direct mechanical replacement for Whitco®, Stegbar®, Austral™ and most other leading brands, including Boral®, Dowell®, Trend®, AWS®, Bradnam’s® and Wideline®. They suit both aluminium and timber awning and casement windows.

Most winders fail in one of three ways: the chain snaps or sags, the gears strip so the handle spins freely, or the lock stops working. The fix is to replace the winder. You don't need a new window.

How to choose the right winder

  • Hand: left hand or right hand. The buying guide shows how to tell which one you have.
  • Chain: most windows take the standard 300 mm chain. Choose a restricted chain where the opening must be limited, such as pool zones and children's rooms. Restricted chains are available in both left and right hand.
  • Colour: more than 15 finishes, including white, black, brown and silver, plus COLORBOND®-matched Monument®, Surfmist®, Paperbark®, Dune®, Woodland Grey®, Primrose®, White Birch® and Jasper®.
  • Locking: lockable or non-lockable. Multi-packs of lockable winders are keyed alike, so one key opens every window.
  • Chain material: zinc for most homes, stainless for coastal areas.

Window winder FAQs

Will a TradeBase winder fit my existing window?
It will fit most Australian awning and casement windows. Check the hand and chain length against your old winder, and see replacement hardware by brand for brand-specific parts.

Do you have right-hand winders with a restricted chain?
Yes. Lockable, keyed-alike right-hand winders come with 100, 120 and 150 mm restricted chains in white, black, brown, Monument® and Surfmist®, with stainless chain options in white and black. Use the filters on this page to select hand, chain length and colour.

Which chain length do I need?
If your window opens fully and isn't near a pool, you need the standard 300 mm chain. Restricted chains limit how far the window opens.

Can I get a winder to match my window frame colour?
Very likely. We carry more than 15 finishes, including the common COLORBOND® frame colours.

Can I replace a chain winder myself?
Yes. Follow the step-by-step chain winder replacement guide.

Do you sell winders for seniors or people with limited grip?
Yes. See window winders for assisted living.
